Exacto HIV Self-Test

The Exacto® HIV self-test is an HIV test for private use, recommended by the Deutsche AIDS-Hilfe.

Performance and features of the test
- 99.9% reliability
- Easy to use with only one drop of blood
- Rapid result: within 10 minutes

A positive test must be confirmed
If the test shows a positive result, you should have the result checked, e.g. at the health office, at a
Checkpoint or in an HIV focus practice. In rare cases (about one in a thousand tests), the test will falsely indicate a positive result, even though you are not infected with HIV. A confirmatory test can then be used to confirm or rule out infection.

HIV infection should be treated immediately
If an HIV infection is confirmed, you should be treated immediately - preferably in an HIV specialist practice or an infectious diseases outpatient clinic.
outpatient clinic - to start HIV therapy to maintain health.

What is HIV? What is AIDS?
HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. HIV mainly affects
cells of the immune system and weakens their ability to fight pathogens and defective body cells.
Without HIV therapy, the immune system becomes weaker and weaker over the course of several years. Symptoms and diseases against which the body can otherwise easily defend itself increasingly appear.
Aids (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) is the term used when certain diseases, some of which are life-threatening, occur,
life-threatening diseases occur. These include severe pneumonia or certain tumors such as Kaposi's sarcoma.
such as Kaposi's sarcoma.

Aids can be prevented
The HIV infection is - if detected in time - well treatable. The drugs are usually well tolerated.
If side effects occur, it is possible to switch to other HIV medications. HIV therapy blocks
the multiplication of the viruses in the body cells. The number of viruses decreases so much within the first weeks of treatment,
that they can no longer be detected in the blood using the usual measuring methods. As a result, the immune system recovers and life expectancy is almost as high as for those not infected with HIV. Since hardly any HI viruses can still be found in the body, HIV cannot be transmitted even during sex without condoms.

Many people do not know about their HIV infection
In Germany, about 13,000 people do not know about their HIV infection. An HIV test and subsequent HIV therapy could prevent HIV from being

become infected with HIV.

HIV testing is simple and safe
A drop of blood is all that is needed for the Exacto HIV self-test. The test measures whether antibodies to HIV are present. Antibodies
can be detected with self-tests no later than 12 weeks after infection. An HIV infection can therefore only be reliably ruled out with the self-test if the test is carried out at the earliest 12 weeks = 3 months after the last risky sexual intercourse (i.e. if there was no risk of HIV in the 12 weeks before the test).

How is HIV transmitted?
HIV can only be transmitted if
- sufficient amounts of viruses are transmitted to the mucous membranes of the
(of the vagina, rectum, inside of the penile foreskin, the "ligament" or urethral entrance) during sex. Unprotected
Vaginal intercourse and unprotected anal intercourse carry a high risk during sex - for both partners. The
risk of oral sex, on the other hand, is very low.
- viruses get directly into the blood when injecting drugs - when sharing syringes and needles with others.
- during pregnancy, childbirth or breastfeeding, viruses are transmitted from the mother to the child via blood or breast milk.
transmitted to the child.

The amount of viruses in HIV-infected persons without therapy is very high in the blood, semen, fluid film on the mucous membrane
of the rectum and vagina, and in breast milk. It is not possible to become infected through saliva, sweat, tear fluid. Here the amount of virus is too small. There is therefore no risk of transmission when kissing, hugging, in the sauna or in toilets.
If the viral load of HIV-positive persons is suppressed thanks to HIV therapy, their sexual partners cannot become infected even during sex without a condom.
condom, their sexual partners cannot become infected. HIV-positive women with HIV therapy can give birth to healthy children.

How can you protect yourself?
- Condoms reliably prevent infection with HIV during vaginal and anal intercourse and also reduce the risk of transmitting other STIs.
- If the HIV-positive partner is successfully treated, the sexual partner cannot become infected with HIV ("protection through therapy").
("protection through therapy").
- Taking HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (HIV-PrEP) can prevent HIV infection during sex.
HIV-PrEP does not protect against other STDs.
- When injecting drugs, "safer use" protects, i.e. do not share syringes and needles with others!

Further information on the correct use of condoms or female condoms (femidoms), on "protection through
therapy", on HIV-PrEP and on "Safer Use" can be found on the
